(c) at the principal ¦

be deepened to 40 feet at L.W.0.3.T. (in the case of the berths at enclosed
and
docks, H.W.0.N.T.), can accommodation be pro- vided for vessels 1,000 feet
in length, and of 100 feet beam ?
If not, to what extent can deepening be effected, and for vessels of what dimensions (length.
draught, and beam at that draught) can accommoda-
tion be provided ?
(2) In what period?
(3) At what approximate
cost-
(a) for the entrance and
approach channel?
(b) in the case of en- closed docks for the entrance lock, if any, of such impor- tant dock or docks? (c) for the principal
berths ?
The depth could be increased to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) in the channel and at the wharves by dredging mud and extend- ing piers. The time occupied would be about two years,
No figures are obtainable for the cost of dredging the channel to this depth. The cost of extending one wharf (Malabs) by 400 ft. so as to provide the necessary wharf accommodation for ▲ vessel 1,000 ft, in length, and of 100 ft. beam is estimated at 90002. approximately, and the cost to the Government of building a new Govern ment wharf to provide the same accom- modation is estimated at from 55,000l. to 60,0001, and to take about 18 months. All the wharves are private property with the exception of the three Govern- ment railway piers.
Deepening to 40 ft. (L.W.Q.B.T.)
or even 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T) at: present pier and wharves is not practicable.
There is u scheine for
new
berthing basin with 3,000 ft. of gray walls with channel thereto having 30ft. of water (L.W.O.S.T.) but no decision has been arrived *t.
The scheme could be carried out in six yours afterapproval of proposal. and is estimated to cost 700,000.. including plant, warehouses, &c.
Information not available. Trade of the island would not warrant at present any material improve- ment upon the present aocom- modation, and the extensive requirements indicated by this question would only be wanted in the event of the port being made a naval base.

New wharves are
struction. They are likely to be completed by the end of 1916, and will provide the following herth- ing:-
1,500 ft. for oversea vessels, with
depth of A. (L.W.O.S.T.). 1,700 ft. for smaller vessels
with u depth from 30 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) downwards, The total cost of the scheme is
195,2887.
The 1,500 ft. wharf will be able to accommodate vessels 1,000 ft. in length, and of 100 ft. beam, with a draught limited to ft. The channels carry a minimum depth of ft. (L.W.O.S.T.). The wharf could be deepened to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) in about 18 months for an approximate further expenditure of 25,0001.

would be involved as a result of these improve ments?
(Note Whore detailed es-
timates have not
already been prepared only approximate fig ures are desired.)
The deepening of the channel to 40 ft. (L.W.O.S.T.) and providing wharf accommodation of similar depth would not increase the present charges for maintenance of harbour works inas- much as there are no currents in the harbour causing silting op and shallow. ing. There are no breakwaters or sea walls erected by the Government nor is any dredging done. It is not anticipa ted that the increased depth would in any way alter these conditions. regards the maintenance of the wharves the longer wharf would cost more to maintain on account of ite increased size, but the increase would only be propor- tionate. If the Government built & sea wall along the water front or a pier

new extensions, if adopted, would
entai! A further maintenance
expenditure of about 3,0001.
The maintenance charges would be increased by 20 per cent. if this deepening were carried out.
